This year's walk united students with the El Centro Police Department, the El Centro Fire Department, parents, staff, and teachers. In solidarity, the adults on campus held signs with the message:
You're not alone, we're here for you.
Students paraded onto the school field through the campus corridors as adults held signs assuring students that they were surrounded by adults that cared. Upper grade students cheered on primary students at the entrance to the field.

The ASB president, Emma, opened the day thanking Mrs. Quiroz for her strong leadership and care she gives to children. In a poem, Emma compared students to seeds that are watered and nurtured. In a rare moment, Mrs. Quiroz was speechless. Mrs. Quiroz followed Emma and had students take a look at all the adults around that care about them. Chief Madueno then spoke to students about the commitment the ECPD has for them and the community. Our new kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Sanchez, then introduced her husband, Firefighter Justin, to the gathering. Justin engaged the students with his enthusiasm and positive demeanor. He connected with students on a personal level.

After a physical fitness style warm-up by my sixth graders, the walk commenced by the sound of the police siren set off by Nathaniel, our vice-president. (Boy, was that a moment for him!) We all then took to the field reading posters made by individual classes and talking with our friends, all in the spirit of unity. Upper grade students walked with their younger brothers and sisters this year, thanks to the suggestion of Trenton, our fifth grade representative.
#unitychain
Culminating the walk, students gathered hands to form a unity chain. (Let me tell you, that was task unto itself.) Chief Madueno had students recite a pledge asking them to speak up and be a friend to those in need.
A perfect ending . . .
With open arms and a huge heart,
Mrs. McAlister
